About this deal

A truly unique book, like nothing I’ve ever read before … a thoughtful and beautifully written story, which is simultaneously gripping. The times of my life when I’m running, I'm happier and healthier, suffer fewer mental health problems. This author knows how to use language to great effect to create a feeling, to create an atmosphere to create a real intensity, The short sharp sentences, next to the long rambling ones create a stream of consciousness so you feel like you’re in the narrators head. Hearst UK is the trading name of the National Magazine Company Ltd, 30 Panton Street, Leicester Square, London, SW1Y 4AJ. and I think I'm not the right audience for it; I simply didn't have patience for the extreme (and intentional) repetitiveness of the prose.

A twisting tale of grief and mental health that sucked me in from the start and swept me along with it … I couldn’t put it down.In short: a bleak, disjointed “wandering” of text, that has a single message and “feeling” to convey.

Had the author stopped at that 25% mark, it would’ve been a 4-star story, and nothing much would’ve been lost. I ended up heavily skimming the main POV segments from about 65% on, then eventually skipped to the end and read the last chapter. That being said, I believe some specific resonant moments will stick with me, even if the overall arc of the story didn't quite deliver. But then contrasting that with a good running experience, where you might be breathing hard, but you're in control and you're connected to your body and you feel really composed.

Does this mean the father is alive, or that some other person or strange being is at hand, playing a nasty and frightening trick on the narrator? A deeply haunting book … The Scottish Highlands have never felt more wild or alive than they do in this … immensely important novel.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. As both a runner and someone who loves the wild landscape of the Scottish Highlands this book transported me to a thoroughly engrossing world.
