His work has been published in five languages, optioned for film, and praised by authors as diverse as Roxane Gay, David Joy, Jerry Stahl, and Meg Gardiner. The highlight of this book is the madness and the horror that comes with it, it made me look around my dark room once or twice and felt my chest pounding. It would take him fifteen minutes to get suited up and through the airlock on a secondary tether, and in the meantime, per standard protocol, our ship’s log would be recording everything, transmitting back to Verux. His reviews appear regularly in places like NPR, Publishers Weekly, the San Francisco Chronicle, Criminal Element, Mystery Tribune, Vol.For one thing, we lost much of the momentum as the pace ground to a halt during this transition, and recovery was impossible as things never felt quite the same again. I like SciFy horror usually (horror is one of those genres I can sometimes handle but other times is just too much for me) and this book is asking to be put on my TBR.

While those similarities are there, and they’re obvious from the start, Dead Silence is its own unique monster full of great writing and well-developed characters.Claire further tells them that her crew had begun to experience these same effects, leading to Voller killing himself. This extreme bi-polar captain was such a broken character, the love story was so painful to listen to, I just couldn't take it anymore. In 2129, 500 passengers and 150 crew left on the Aurora's maiden voyage for a yearlong solar system cruise. I don’t usually branch out into horror, but Alien has proved that I can enjoy a good haunted house in space, and when Dead Silence by S.

Normally this wouldn’t be too unusual, except the Aurora went missing twenty years ago, lost to the mysteries of space…until now. The two timeline stories come neatly together and the author keeps the reader hanging on with the million-dollar question bubbling under the surface: ‘what did happen to the Aurora? As we learn, there was plenty of scary stuff to come and for some reason the author just jets us away from it all unexpectedly. We’ve gone over this before, but I always like to preface my reviews of this genre with a note: I’m not super into Sci Fi as a genre, though there are certain exceptions that I am good with. Claire spends a lot of time obsessing over the reality and quality of her thoughts, but interestingly, doesn't seem to have much insight, only repetitive guilt cycles. That the book fell short of them has more to do with me and my feelings on the different direction the story took in the second half, which I felt stole something away from the creeping horror. Not to mention all the “exploratory” diagnostics and procedures over the last three weeks in the Tower. Dead Silence mixes horror, mystery and sci-fi into a thrill ride sure to shock you out of your reading rut.
