About this deal

There seems to be an assumption that the elimination of violence was achieved by crowds of conformist, civilised people hunting down the variant monsters with torches and pitchforks as if they were Frankensteins – and that's the only evolution that's ever taken place: Disappointingly, all that was squandered away for pedestrian bang, bang, bang. There was extreme armed violence, and there was graphic sex. Granted, this was true to noir-form, a hallmark of Morgan, but it was often counter-intuitive for this story predicated upon the world being a better place because of softer, more feminized approaches like tolerance and negotiations. But gosh dang all that talking and whatnot, there was nothing like exertions of masculine prowess and windpipe crushing to resolve matter expediently. The disconnect was too flawed to ignore.

For Kane, time is running out - all he needs is to get to the conviction without being discovered and for Eddie, it's a race against time to get to the killer before the wrong man takes the fall. and i know many people shy away from courtroom dramas because the plot is a court case and interest can be lost in all of the mumbo jumbo technical descriptions of the law. but that doesnt happen in this. everything is detailed and explained in such an accessible and encouraging way. I was intrigued by the plot...a killer on the jury. and not just any killer, but the one they are seeking. And no, that's not a spoiler. It is clear from almost the very beginning.Forget about solving all these crimes; the signal triumph here is (spoiler) the heroine’s survival. Kudos, Mr. Cavanagh, as you push the limits and do so well at challenging all I thought I knew about legal thrillers.

Outstanding - an intriguing premise, a tense, gripping build-up, and a spectacular climax. This guy is the real deal. Trust me.” ―Lee ChildGenetically modified humans is nothing new to SCI-FI but I haven't ran across any where the building material came from the savage hunter/killers that had long since been bred out of the human race. Carl Maralis is the product of such genetic engineering called Variant Thirteen. I knew 5 years ago where we headed," Monch shared over the phone. "Sure, we've always done socially and politically aware music, but I'm tired of this "love will win" nonsense. Love may be the most powerful vibrating force, but consciousness is spreading and it's impossible not to be more aware of the evil that has kept the world in complete darkness. TH1RT3EN is the musical personification of me and my comrades at combat." Bailed out from jail on a quid pro quo, the UN teamed with Marsalis to investigate a random murder spree. Apparently doomed by both nature and nurture to have no sense of humor or charisma, Marsalis was not a character to warm up to but no matter, he promised adrenaline surges in his intuitive pursuit of the murderer, another Thirteen. A point of disbelief for me was his rampant “Thirteen paranoia” employed to connect the dots or extract information, coincident after coincident, where previously the whole of UN and their artificial intelligence were unable to.

Celebrity Movie Star Robert Soloman has been convicted of murdering his wife Ariella Bloom and her lover, though he swears he’s innocent. There is plenty of action, and lots of twists and turns. I had a zillion questions bouncing around in my brain as I read...who? how? why? what? how? how? how? And they were all answered. Now when we first meet Flynn in this book, he is defending a case in court in which he makes a fool of a Detective, using evidence against him without entirely exposing what he knows to be the truth of the case. This could well prove to be a grave error for Flynn, but as to how remains to be seen. You know from the start that it is something that will bite him on the arse, and then that whole sense of jeopardy, waiting for the when rather than the if, just adds to the tension which drips throughout the book. And this really is a tense read believe me. This isn't believable but it’s fun as hell. Eddie Flynn was a con artist before he was a lawyer. He’s a great main character, full of observant remarks about everyone else, sharp as hell, able to see connections that others miss. And Kane is one creepy villain. He can’t feel, in either the real or figurative sense.

A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy. My favorite parts of TH1RT3EN were the sections focusing on the killer and his interactions with his fellow jurors. Cavanagh highlights the diversity within the jury. There are parents, widows, unmarried, divorced, business owners, etc. I don’t think it would be too much of a spoiler to divulge that this is not this killer’s first time on a jury. Readers will get a brief glimpse of how the killer works and widdles away at this jury, attempting to guide them towards the verdict he wants. However I wish we could have had more jury room action. I would have loved to read how he planned to deal with this diverse group and the unpredictability of human nature. I want to thank Flatiron Books/Macmillan for the free Arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. Where the other books I've read by Morgan play in the space between then and now, in the gap between what you remember, what other people remember and those intersections today, this book plays in the social space between people and their perceptions of each other in the here and now. This is not another "frozen caveman wakes up and hilarity ensues" story. This book takes the old joke "Stress is the feeling created when the mind overrides the body's desire the choke the shit out of some asshole who deserves it" and treats it with respect, thoughtfullness and integrity. Carl is not a neolithic, thoughtless killing machine. Like all of Richard's characters, he has depth and breadth that keep this character driven story moving along at a fast clip.
