She reveals that most people struggle in some way, even if they do not show it. (groundbreaking, isn't it?). Then she introduces "revolutionary" concepts of mindfulness, gratitude, and self-compassion. She heavily relies on cognitive behaviour therapy's theory that by changing how you think, you can change how you feel and behave. And, of course, exercise, go outside, spend time with loved ones, she says. I read this because I wanted to learn more about mental health in general and specifically anxiety. I liked Dr. Smith’s writing style because she’s realistic and she does not like to be overly positive. She even criticizes some of the common advice given in real life and social media which can be more harmful than helpful. Physical Movement - And this doesn't have to be a large workout or activity. Simply springing into action and moving our bodies creates motivation, which is simply a by-product of action. Es un libro increíble, lleno de consejos, herramientas y opciones para poder superar problemas del día a día. Está bien explicado, bien estructurado y tiene todo tipo de ejercicios prácticos para complementar la teoría que explica.

Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Julie Smith - Waterstones

The power of any thought is in how much we buy into it and how much we believe it to be true and meaningful. Thoughts aren't facts, they're judgements, theories, memories, predictions, and interpretations about the future. The brain's job is to save us as much time and energy as possible and this means it takes short-cuts and makes guesses / predictions all the time but with limited information.

Written in short, bite-sized entries, you can turn straight to the section you need depending on the challenge you're facing - and immediately find the appropriate tools to help with . . . Thoughts are not facts. They are guesses, stories, memories, ideas, and theories. They are … one potential explanation for the sensations you are experiencing … So what does this mean for those anxious thoughts that pop into our heads? It means the power of that thought … is in how much we buy into it. How much we believe that thought to be a true reflection of reality. The best way to break down the power that thoughts have over our emotional state is to first get some distance from them. How do we get distance from something that is inside our head? This was a very useful and practical guide for mental health issues. I loved her short, to the point chapters with tools that were also summarized at the end. The tools fitted nicely to the themes, and I’m sure everyone will find tips that they can use to improve their well-being. The author also explains concepts in a way that is easy to grasp, and I kept thinking that I must use these explanations myself when talking with clients. She was also empathic and it shows how much she cares for others, genuinely wanting to help. The use of small self-revelation were also fitting, making the reader relate and believe in the tools presented.

The book is a self-help one revolving around mental health and ways to cope with every day challenges. It is divided into main parts -each discussing a certain topic- with multiple chapters in each part. The chapters are short for the most part with a summary at the end of each chapter. As a veteran reader of self-help books I look for original content and information that can be actually put to use rather than theoretical prose. This book accomplishes both of these things and there are actual tools and ideas which can be put to use by those who need some help with emotional issues. Dr. Julie has a following on social media and this book is her way of putting together advise on a variety of subjects from self-esteem, to depression to grief. I appreciated the fact that the author did not start the book with chapters of scientific studies on the brain as I have read those many times and that type of information is not useful to someone who is suffering. Each chapter has a theme and she includes ideas which are identified with a light bulb graphic and tools which are identified with a wrench graphic. I would not say any of her tools are new but they are presented in a new way which makes it valuable. Read more Look Inside Details It’s good, basic, helpful advice. Probably every reader will find several things that make a difference. I was impressed how often her discussions on each kind of life challenge involved some aspect of mindfulness. She talks very practically about mindfulness during real-time living, and has an impressively simple, basic way of describing what it is. I’m gonna go ahead and just quote her on mindfulness about thoughts:Why was there such a need for you to write it and why don’t you think women are given the right knowledge during pregnancy? Dr. Smith's writing style is empathetic and compassionate, creating a safe space for readers to explore their emotions and vulnerabilities. The book not only provides practical tools but also promotes a deeper understanding of how our minds work. This knowledge enables readers to fortify their mental health proactively, making it an essential companion in the journey towards self-care. Why haven’t women been given this sort of information so readily? Is it because of the patriarchal society that we live in, fear of putting women off having a baby or simply just a blatant oversight? Whatever the reason it’s simply not ok. Having a baby is a major life changing event and needs to be honoured and considered like this.

Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? Six things I learned from Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before?

Through it's practical structure, it allows the reader to dip in and out, with bitesize chapters focusing on a specific topic or issue. Ultimately, wellbeing comes from inward. We have much more power over our own emotions and thoughts than we think, therefore taking responsibility for our own wellbeing allows us to construct new emotional experiences and responses.

Ir svarīgi runāt un rūpēties par mūsu mentālo labbūtību un fizisko veselību - tās iet roku rokā. Un ir svarīgi zināt, kur meklēt palīdzību, kad tā ir nepieciešama. We hear a lot about the coronavirus - its physical symptoms, its medical dangers, the residual effects of severe infection - but we hear next to nothing about the stress of living through an ongoing pandemic. Set the virus aside for a moment. Merely enduring the day-to-day of it all has been extremely hard. The psychological strain? Crushing. And many of the remedies for psychological strain (join a gym, take a class, visit loved ones, get a hug) have been forbidden to us for great stretches of time. This is worth someone's attention, and if the government isn't going to give it any, if the media isn't going to give it any, if Dr. Fauci has his hands full, then I guess we're on our own. The first book by a leading women’s health physiotherapist that breaks down taboos around pre-natal and post-natal conditions and offers invaluable and often life-changing advice for mums and mums-to-be.
